I Must Confess

I don’t watch the news anymore

Not knowing helps a little

With all that pain and heartache around us

Life’s turning a bit brittle

I no longer get shaken by calamities

The earth doesn’t move under my feet

Paris to me , can’t be mad gunmen somehow

But quaint cafes lined up along cobbled street

It’s sad that some have a fault in their stars

But that’s not the case with me

All’s well with mine (or so I think)

and carry on in my alternate reality

Sometimes its easier to just be , even if the mask begins to wear

Let the odds not bother us , its so convenient to not care

Shutting out the noise , muting off the news, I must confess

The path of least resistance works better than a life under duress

The post was written under the #BlogBuddyMavericks program by @blogchatter for the weekly writing prompt “I must confess” .

There’s so much hurt , pain , outrage and sadness in news and every where around us that with time we are becoming a little oblivious . The big headlines dont effect us any more , the death and misery doesnt seem heart – wrenching. We are living in our alternate reality – partly due to ignorance , partly coz we feel that ‘bad things wont happen to us’.  The tone of the lines above might come across a little harsh , the sentiment actually is ‘make-believe as a defence mechanism’ .  Please share your views!

  1. I agree! It is the bitter truth. We have numbed ourselves to the sordid situations around us, blissful in our coccooned world. It is a defence mechanism developed to save oneself from the feeling of helplessness at the situations at large. However, a universal positive hope for a new world order free of chaos and injustice is what we need…..the power of positive thinking and its manifold miracles! Great read!!

    1. Thank you for dropping by and your kind words Kala!
Some choose public outrage , others choose comfortably numb like you pointed out.
Sad that just to get by an ordinary day , one needs dollops of positive thinking and miracles!
But good to see so many of us think alike , makes one feel saner!

  2. I suppose in a lot of ways, we have become numb (by choice) to a lot of things. A lot of these things are often out of our control and try and we might to change them, it never works.
Call it an alternate universe or anything else, I prefer that to the stark and harsh reality that the world is today.
    Interesting take, Chandni.

PS: I particularly like the closing part where you’ve said we use ‘make-believe as a defence mechanism’. In fact, I think a lot of us would love to escape to those ‘wonderful worlds’ that exist in books and movies.

    1. Thanks for dropping by Sid.
Now that I have got a stamp of approval from your side , time to read the post from you that started it all .
Perhaps – this circle of goodness can inspire yet another weekly prompt?

  3. Chandi I remmeber after 16th december I felt something similar… the idea of it happening to a girl, to someone who was like me, like my sister it did damage to my mind and soul. And I confess I never mention that news to anyone, for me it never happened. I cannot take the fact that it did and we couldn’t do anything..

Lovely take on the prompt love 🙂

    1. The secrets that are closest to us are the secrets we never share do we?
But sometimes when no one’s looking , writing them down seems cathartic .. I guess that’s the beauty of this prompt — Thanks for the inspiration and the kind words!

  4. Yes, we have only more of sad things to show in News. We are more than 7,000,000,000 billion people and we keep growing.. A lot of happy things happen all around the world all the time..

The people who do the sad things want this to go across the world and to make us panic, find a reason to hate and be suspicious of others.. And the news just do that… help the people who want us to be sad… If they don’t get this reaction, will they still do this?

    1. Hey Sathish , not sure if the news particularly aims to make us sadder .. its perhaps how things around us has become.
But am sure for every thing sad happening around there’s one happy story .. for example , a group of complete strangers writing and creating the circle of goodness..
Thanks for dropping by and leaving a note!

  5. I get what you are saying here, and I must confess too I have distanced myself from these horrific news items and used make-believe as a defense mechanism.
Loved your take on the prompt. Very well written!
