Free Falling #AtoZChallenge Day 6

The Cars zoomed past each other . Their blinding bright lights twinkling like fireflies on a high. The best part about looking down at them from this distance was that you could barely hear a sound. Honking was the side effect apart from traffic jams of course that invention of cars had cursed human civilization with .

God created Men and Men created Cars and then there was no peace. She thought to herself cursing every movie that showed a debonair man behind the wheels of a fancy car , the one’s that make you quit everything and drive away into the horizon . All starry eyed and whacko in the head.

Gosh , I hate men and cars. She turned back and pranced around on the terrace of her building.  Mentally blocking every happy ending that even remotely had these two loathsome elements in it.

And phones. She added to her all increasing list. We could so do without them as well.

She stared at her iPhone . Re checked the message folder , whatsapp folder , Twitter timeline , Facebook timeline and every other possible nook and corner for a clue.

And when she couldn’t find any , she rechecked the signal and cursed men , men with cars and men with cars and phones again. Hurriedly prancing the small terrace area a hundredth time.

Tring tring. She stared at the screen & disconnected the call since it wasn’t him .She didn’t want her phone to be engaged , when he called. Finally. Full of repentance. Crying to take him back and she would go on mercilessly to say ,

“Oh ! its you .. sorry ..don’t have your number saved any more . Am heading out with friends , talk laters? “

She smiled wickedly. Yes , I would give him hell. You just can’t dump anyone a couple of hours before a celebratory dinner date . A year of togetherness means something!

But she was now losing patience.  She had been going back and forth on the scene , the pacing of the terrace , the staring at the screen and the re checking for messages and call. And she has been doing all this for 3 hours now .

Her rage had now reached a level that she never knew existed. She stared down from her 15th floor building’s terrace soaking in again how peaceful it all looked from up there.

With each passing second , she was getting surer of her decision . She had relived every moment spent with him , right from the day he had offered him a lift when she was stepping out of office to take her evening metro right till a couple of hours back when he gave her the ‘It’s not you , its me ” breakup speech , over the phone.

The phone he had gifted her. The one she loved so much once and hated with equal intensity  now.  The one that was her lifeline till now and .. she paused for a moment.Just like him , she now hated every thing associated with even the thought of him.

This is insane. This has to end. I can’t keep feeling like this. Waiting endlessly.

This.Has.To.End.

She stared down. Falling in love is so hard on the knees , she hummed the Aerosmith number in her head.

The next minute , it was hurling down , free-falling from the 15th floor .

As another firefly joined the buzzing lights on the busy street , its screen glowing .

Seconds before it hit the ground , the call came in .

But the phone now was scattered across like pieces of her broken heart.

  1. OMG…if only she had waited that wee bit longer! Ahh, couldn’t we all do with a little patience! I don’t know why, but for some reason I was picturing Priyanka Chopra as the girl in the story, like her role in Fashion!
    Beautifully done, Chandni 🙂

    1. Wah ! now all I need to do is sign up Imtiaz ali and get PeeCee onboard as soon as she’d done with her Hollywood assignments and I would have my movie ready .. nahin? 🙂
You are way too kind Kala!

  2. This is so wonderfully done CM <3
What I loved the most was that she let go of the phone seconds before the call came, that way she didn't have to revisit the agony she had let go in that free-falling phone.
All was peace and quiet in the end.

  3. This happens, right? At least with me, it does! Intriguing read. I even thought she might be jumping down. Err… bad! Loved it. May be it was for her own good! 🙂

    1. The build up leading to the idea that she might jump down was the tiny little twist I was trying to add.. glad you liked it 🙂

  4. Phew! Was sitting at the edge of my seat when you added the 15th floor spin. Jaw dropped as the phone fell. Phew! *takes deep breath*
Amazing narration in this one! In a way, I think it’s good that the phone fell and broke, and she didn’t get a chance to pick up and speak. She wouldn’t have said the right thing, because she was not in the proper frame of mind. Either way, it would have ended badly for her.
    Loved this post! 🙂

    1. Goodness.. am amazed that you just completely got what I was trying to convey. completely and wholly.. Fab you are true to your name 😉
      Thanks for dropping by!

  5. I liked that she dropped the phone I mean even a small thing like phone, though just a device, he had given it to her. Keeping it would have conjured more memories and who knows, she might have to face the entire ordeal.
    THis had to end.
Yes! If dropping the phone ended it so drop the phone.

    1. Yes Seeya.. whatever helps us let go and start afresh. Dropping the phone was symbolic of letting go .. breaking off.
Glad you liked my post 🙂
