The Other Woman #AtoZChallenge Day 15

She placed the kettle on the burner and started to prepare for the breakfast.

Chopping fruits and packing them in lunch boxes , beating eggs and setting them aside to make 3 different kinds for as many people, beating the coffee till it filled the tiny kitchen with its strong aroma. She went on with her chores with the precision of a sculpture creating a master piece.

It’s strange how men can’t even remember what they were served for dinner last night , more so when there’s a cricket match on. You might as well feed them cardboard box and with their beer and chips they just might gulp it down in between boundaries and third umpire decisions.

But women, their mini super computers minds remember every tiny detail. Birthdays of extended family members , who liked their food which way , which white shirt was dry clean only , so on and so forth.

In her 30 years of being the woman of the house she’d become a part of the bricks and mortar and the very air that filled up these four walls. She had seen the circle of life – with birth , deaths , marriages , celebrations & heartbreak, guests who over stayed their welcome , friends who were more than family .

She sipped the last of her filter coffee , reminiscing about the era gone by and placed the  newspaper on the tray with two cups of freshly brewed tea .

“Good Morning , the tea is here . Get ready and come over for breakfast ” , she announced cheerily as she stepped into their room.

She was leaving for good in the noon , catching a train to her native place feeling a strange contentment . They were the man and the woman of the house & she the other woman.

But she was the centre of their universe and she was leaving a void behind.

  1. Brilliant Chandni! How do you manage to do it every time? This is one other woman, every woman can’t do without! Every time I do a double take when the story ends and re-read the whole story again and admire the subtlety with which the twist is delivered!

  2. Oh man! She surely is one woman that no one can do without! This is a twist I wasn’t expecting – I had to read the entire story again to make sure I didn’t misunderstand!

  3. Woah. Fabulous twist, I must say!
And that thing about men forgetting what they had for dinner last night during the cricket match, that’s applicable to me 365 days of the year 😛

The other woman and the woman of the house truly have important roles, but the contribution of the first one is not always acknowledged properly.
And, the other woman may also be the woman of another house 😉
