Across the room their eyes met again.
Over her champagne glass , she could see the way he lit a smoke and wildly gesticulated completely consumed in a conversation . Perhaps about some eCommerce start up launch or maybe world politics with that guy in the finance department .
Tugging her dark wavy curls behind her ear , she tried to get the drift of what her companion was saying. But she couldn’t. For the past 15 minutes , that’s what she’d been doing. Trying hard to look hooked , while being complete hooked to him . That stranger in a room full of familiar people . An inexplicable magnetic force , he was literally pulling her , blissfully unaware of his effect on her.
So is this the elusive Love at first sight
She thought to herself. The one that makes every other thing – living or other wise vanish into thin air. All you see is that person , the object of your affection.
She felt a strange rush as he looked at her again. ‘Cmon, you can do this’. She gave herself a nudge. After all she was the best performing sales person .
‘Closer. You are called a closer . So go ahead , get close to him.’
Gulping down the rest of her drink , she took another uncertain step across the room. As she saw a couple of more eyes turn towards her admiringly , she felt her steps become more confident.
‘Hi , haven’t seen you around , are you with somebody?’
She cheeringly approached the sharply dressed man who seemed to have stepped out of a romance novel cover right into her life. In her mind, she had already visualized the way this tale was going to shape up. Some years down the line , she planned to tell her grand kids how granny never waited for things to come to her – she went ahead and got them instead. And they would laugh , sipping tea in their plush penthouse on the high street , lost into each others eyes as the sun would spread its orange warmth across the summer sky.
Alanis’s ‘Head over Feet’ was playing as if life needed a back ground score . She blushed like a college girl high on her first crush as he looked at her curiously.
‘Yes, am new to the city but here for only the weekend . Am giving her some company’ he said , pointing at a lady chatting away with some one in the balcony.
Turning her head to him , questioningly at first and devastatingly the second words left his mouth.
‘That’s my better half . She works in Sales and you ? What brings you to the party? You work here too?’
The Second Best Sales Person of the year had beaten her in the game of life. She needed something stronger than Champagne right now. She walked towards the bar leaving him slightly mixed up as Alanis crooned.
She met the man of her dreams and met his beautiful wife , isn’t it Ironic?
This 26 part fiction short story series is inspired by women who are like you and me . Not superheroes , but Everyday Women. They have a voice , a dream , a vision , an intent or even a point of view. These slice of life tales are work in progress – if you can share a personal story in the comments it may help me conjure up a story .Would truly appreciate!

Thanks Lori.. I just Love some of these very strong women vocalists whom I used to listen up when I was in college . So nice to of you to notice and leave that bit as a note..
My pleasure, CM… there are a lot of strong female artists out there. Alanis has always been a fave of mine too.
It’s all about timing. Her timing was off. If only she had met him first.
Cute little piece! I love finding irony in life, in the day to day. Love to use irony in my humor.
Revisit the Tender Years with me during the #AtoZChallenge at Life & Faith in Caneyhead!
Personally dont much believe in love at first sight – so as far as my feelings go – just as well that he was married 😉
Haha, that was another twist in the tale! Too bad for Miss Salesperson of the year….I am sure there is someone better waiting for her.

Damn, what a twist! Reminds me of this sentence I heard somewhere: What’s the whole point of conquering the whole world, if you don’t have true love by your side?
Amazing mahn. You blew me away with this!
Chandni! I love the way you play with words. The twists and turns are always unexpected and makes your story more beautiful.
