She smiled at him & her warm eyes glittered mischievously.
He had known her longer than he’d know any one he wasn’t related to . They played together as 5 year old neighbors , were school bus companions and helped each other through that life changing phase called ‘stepping into teens’. A couple of days short of his 14th birthday , his parents moved to a different city . The promise of a letter every week took backseat as lives and loves and many other complexities took over. Other than that one odd Facebook like or birthday text , they had turned into mere acquaintances by the time they turned 25.
During a work trip back in the city over a weekend he dropped by at her place for old times sake .
Sometime during the fake-fight for the last slice of pizza & her passionately talking about the course in art restoration that she was joining in next fall in Paris , he fell in love with her .
A week later , they were married.
They complimented each other brilliantly he thought. She the perfect planner , he the earnest executor.
This trip to Paris was planned for their first anniversary by her putting into use every piece of information she had gathered most of her adult life. The cruise on Seine river , the drive to the perfume factory at Fragonard , the visit to Louvre , the walk down at Champ Elysees. Every little detail planned to the T . The departure , stay , down to the candle light dinners & café outings.
She wanted to live every moment , something that gave his plain insipid life a purpose.
“Sir , would you like to get down here ? ” The chauffeur’s voice made him realize , he was doing it again. Retracing their life together .
He got down and started to walk towards the Eiffel Tower that sparkled like a newly wed bride against the setting sun .
His phone beeped again. The much dreaded notifications . The ones he wanted to bury deep into the heart of the Seine . The ones that gave purpose to his life now.
“Congratulations on your first anniversary . Walk through your year with us ” Cheerily the Facebook message proclaimed as longingly , he looked at their year together . A lifetime of love , flashed in front of him as he swiped one picture after the another .
she was the perfect planner and she had planned the perfect holiday . But what about thereafter , she hadn’t planned that and he had no idea how to carry on .
She smiled at him in the pictures , her warm eyes glittering mischievously .
